Discover Bergen's seven mountains

Saying that you have completed the 7-mountain hike is a big deal for both locals and visitors alike. Here is how to conquer the peaks of what are called de syv fjell around Bergen – in a single day!

The route is 35 kilometres long and includes a total ascent of 2,500 metres. 

But you don't need to be an elite athlete to experience Bergen's urban mountains. Climbing one of them is more than enough.

Here is an overview of Bergen's mountains:

1. Lyderhorn (396 masl) 

Lyderhorn means 'the lead horn' and is named after its historic role as a landmark for those arriving to Bergen by sea.

This is the city's most characteristic mountain when viewed from the city centre. From its peak, you can admire the view towards the west and over the islands of Askøy, Sotra and Øygarden.

2. Damsgårdsfjellet (317 masl) 

Damsgårdfjellet lies to the west of Bergen. 

There are several trails up to the top, both from the suburbs by Melkeplassen and from the other side by Lyderhorn. The Damsgårdsfjellet area is also home to a number of outdoor recreation options.

3. Løvstakken (477 masl) 

Løvstakken is the highest mountain to the west of Bergen city centre. The nicest cairn in Bergen is found at its peak, as are stunning views of the city centre, Fyllingsdalen, Flesland, and Mount Ulriken. 

4. Ulriken (643 masl) 

Ulriken is the highest of the seven mountains. The trail up the mountain includes a 750-metre-long sherpa stairway featuring 1,300 steps. 

You can also ride the Ulriksbanen cable car to the top! There, you will find a small shop, café and restaurant (and stunning views!).

5. Fløyen (320 masl) 

Fløyen is one of Bergen's biggest visitor attractions.  

The mountain is easily accessible from the centre and provides panoramic views of the city. Hike the gravel path or ride the Fløibanen funicular to the top, where you can purchase refreshments.

6. Rundemanen (568 masl) 

Rundemanen is easy to access from the city centre. Look for its 106-metre-high mast that looms from its peak. 

Rundemanen has beautiful views of Mount Ulriken, the plateau and the islands west of Bergen. The route is easy and you can start from Fløyen, among other places.

7. Sandviksfjellet (417 masl) 

Sandviksfjellet lies to the northeast of the city centre. There are lovely views of the centre, Sandviken, and the harbour from the top. 

Stoltzekleiven is the most famous route to the top, but there are a number of other trails too. You can also reach Sandviksfjellet from Fløyen.
