The five best bars and restaurants in Bergen

Giovanni Sanchez is one of the most well-known faces on the Bergen nightlife scene. Here are his top five insider tips.

In the streets of Bergen, many people know who Giovanni is, and he ceaselessly greets people left and right as he walks through its narrow lanes. He is behind one of Bergen's newest restaurants, Fresquito, overlooking both Vågen and the city centre.

Originally from Chile, Giovanni has lived in the city for 35 years and has launched a number of different eateries and bars. He really knows what he's talking about when it comes to atmosphere, good food, and nightlife:

"I always give my honest recommendation, whether it's my place or not. I think the industry should collaborate more and promote each other," says Giovanni.

So, who better to ask for the hottest tips on exciting menus and tasty drinks?

Here are Giovanni's top five favourite places in Bergen.

1. Skostredet – the street that has everything

A cosy and intimate cobblestone street in the middle of Bergen. There is always a good atmosphere and vibrant life, and you will find both Italian restaurants, Spanish tapas, and cool bars here, as well as clothing shops and small cafés. Quite simply, a very social and cosy neighbourhood.

Address: Skostredet

  • Giovanni's favourite place in Bergen is the pedestrian street Skostredet.

  • Here, he meets restaurant colleagues..

  • ... and friendly locals on the street.

2. No stress – for great cocktails

"A place that's really nice and has really good cocktails," says Giovanni.

No Stress is known for having the best drinks, either developed and made themselves, or the familiar classics one always finds on the menu.

Address: Hollendergaten 11

3. Folk & Røvere - for real nightlife

"I always have to go to Folk og Røvere, where all the robbers in Bergen are," says Giovanni with a laugh.

The bar (named after the classic Norwegian children's book When the Robbers Came to Cardamom Town) is also located in Skostredet, where both locals and tourists gather for good beer. In addition, its interior matches its name, since sitting there is like being in an old pirate town, surrounded by ropes and chests.

Address: Sparebanksgaten 4

Folk & Røvere is the place to go for beer and nightlife.

4. Bod 24

"If I'm going to take the trip a little further out from the city centre, Bod 24 is the place to go. You can enjoy good food and even swim there in the summer. But it's lovely there all year round," says Giovanni.

The place is a combination of café, restaurant, and concert venue. Check its calendar of events for listings to experience everything from jazz to yoga.

Address: Sjøgaten 24

5. Ho Ho snaddermat

"A Chinese restaurant at Danmarksplass. It's a good family restaurant," says Giovanni.

Address: Bjørnsons gate 18
