Our tips for the pre-Christmas period in Bergen

Bergen does not hibernate when winter comes - on the contrary. Experience the popular Christmas market in Bergen and other magical holiday activities for the whole family.

From the atmospheric Christmas market at Festplassen and the world's biggest gingerbread town to the top of Mount Fløyen, there is a lot to enjoy in the run-up to Christmas. With De Bergenske's centrally located hotels, including Bergen Børs Hotel and Skostredet Hotel, you can stay right in the heart of the city, just a short distance to all the cosy Christmas experiences.

Here are our top 5 tips for Christmas – from the Christmas market to a tasty Christmas lunch in Bergen:

1.The Christmas market in Bergen

When the sun goes down, Bergen lights up. The festival square is filled with stalls packed with excellent Christmas gift options and delicious flavour experiences.

String lights tie the stalls together and create the perfect setting for an eventful day for the whole family. For the children, there are rides, a Ferris wheel, and a Christmas tree forest, where they can play and experience holiday magic. In the heated lounge, both young and old can take a break from the winter cold and enjoy locally sourced food and drink with a roof overhead.

The Christmas market runs from November 22 until December 22.

2. Kulturhuset i Bergen

Kulturhuset is Bergen's cultural centre where you can experience an informal and cosy Christmas atmosphere. The cultural centre offers free events such as the Opera Pub, Christmas Special, and a host of concerts. Stay updated on its programme here.

3. Fløyen during Advent

For over 20 years, a Christmas concert and lighting of Advent candles have been held every Sunday in Advent at the top of Mount Fløyen.  The large Advent candles will be lit throughout December. The atmosphere is amazing, and the candles provide a good backdrop for lovely Christmas photos.

Fløyen is also home to the beautiful Christmas forest, which is decorated by children from kindergartens and schools around Bergen. The trees are adorned with handmade Christmas decorations made of popsicle sticks, pine cones, and other natural materials. Stroll through the forest and be inspired.

4. Christmas lunch in Frescohallen

Frescohallen at Bergen Børs Hotel has been named the world's most beautiful room in the historic buildings category and offers a very unique atmosphere for Christmas parties.

"Delicious pork ribs are always good, but the surroundings here make for a unique experience," says Yngve Hansen, General Manager of De Bergenske.

In the 1,100 square metre hall, surrounded by Axel Revold's beautiful murals, Christmas lunch tastes even better. Book your table here.

5. Fjord views from waterside saunas in Bergen

Heit Bergen Sauna is open all year round. Heit Bergen has several saunas by the water at Marineholen and Laksevåg. Here, you can take a refreshing, ice cold dip in the fjord and head straight into the heat of a sauna, with spectacular views all around. It's the perfect way to get a break from Christmas shopping and enjoy the tranquillity that the Bergen's nature offers.

Plan your Christmas holiday break in Bergen today and stay centrally at De Bergenske to get the most from your experience!
