Classic Christmas food in Bergen

"We serve Bergen's best pinnekjøtt," says Eric Gjelsvik, venue manager at De Bergenske.

"It's definitely the best in Bergen," Eric underlines for emphasis.

Wesselstuen's Christmas menu features the most classic dishes from Western Norway, perfect for both Christmas lunches and Christmas parties. Bergen's best pinnekjøtt (according to Eric) is supplied by Brakstad, experts who are known for their exclusive pinnekjøtt, salt-cured lamb ribs made using traditional methods that ensure rich flavours and tender meat. Natural curing makes pinnekjøtt a premium choice for Christmas parties. Brakstad also places great emphasis on animal welfare in its production.

For those who want an alternative to pinnekjøtt, lutefisk is also served with traditional accompaniments, so everyone can find their favourite traditional Norwegian dish on the menu.

Christmas parties in recently renovated Wesselstuen

Wesselstuen, which has been a popular meeting place in Bergen since 1957, is located right in the very heart of the city and is known for its rich history and cultural significance. Over the years, it has been a favourite haunt of artists, writers, journalists, and locals alike. Named after the poet Johan Herman Wessel, the premises exude genuine local tradition and charm – something that is particularly evident during the Christmas holidays.

Interior designer Ivar Johan Pettersen sought to preserve the classic style when he led the Wesselstuen's refurbishment in 2024.

"I remember going to Wesselstuen on Saturdays with my dad when I was a kid. The smell of waffles, beer, and soda remains fixed in my memory," he says.

The restaurant has retained its timeless charm, making it the perfect place for a delicious dinner or an atmospheric Christmas party with friends.
