Located in the centre of Bergen, Skostredet Hotel opened its doors in June 2024. It has now been nominated for an award in the category "best new building of the year" by Arkitekturopprøret.
"We are incredibly happy and proud of the nomination. Naturally, there are many considerations to take into account when preparing such a construction project. This confirms that when you build with your heart and with a focus on quality, it works. We are developing in Bergen and for Bergen," says Yngve Hansen, hotel director at Bergen Børs Hotel and Skostredet Hotel.
Each year, Arkitekturopprøret nominates candidates for new building of the year, in the categories of the ugliest and the most beautiful building. The nomination for Skostredet Hotel reads as follows: "With its décor-free grid façade, this is one of this year's more controversial nominations, but closer inspection reveals that this is a building that has been created with great love for Bergen's traditional architecture. The high slate roof rises above a façade that follows the line of buildings on the street, and has colours reminiscent of nearby Bryggen, an elegant cornice, and references to the coast's Empire architecture in the placement of its windows."
According to its manifesto, Arkitekturopprøret, 'Architecture Rebellion', is a group that seeks to promote traditional architecture and create urban spaces in which people can thrive, in contrast to modern, functionalist building styles that are often criticised for being monotonous and un-aesthetic.
Skostredet Hotel is owned by De Bergenske, a family of six distinctive hotels and a number of restaurants in Bergen city centre. The firm of Elfrida Bull Bene designed the building.
The hotel, which is centrally located in the buzzing nightlife area around Skostredet, is the only Bergen building among the ten finalists.
"We built it with the aim of reaching a specific group, which is why we succeeded. This is a design hotel for people who understand the choice of materials, functionality, and design solutions. Everyone has done a fantastic job, and the available space has been utilised well. Both we and the guests like the feeling of entering Skostredet Hotel. You will find complete peace here," says Hansen.
Natural materials, natural light, sustainability, and freshness are the words that the architecture and design firm Claesson Koivisto Rune uses to describe the hotel.
"I think you should build a hotel for the time in which you live. If it's done right, it will be a classic in 100 years, when it will still be filled with fashionable people," says Eero Koivisto, who designed the interior at Skostredet Hotel.
